Wait. So…. Shigure had hugged this mystery woman and didn’t change into a dog? Haru caught his mouth falling slightly open at the thought of that being possible. She wasn’t a Sohma. Shigure was supposed to have changed into his Zodiac form. But he hadn’t. If the circumstances of Haru and Shigure’s meeting been any different, Haru may have called Shigure a liar without a second’s hesitation. But the usually chipper and mischievous older Sohma was being serious.
As Haru worked on wrapping his mind around what Shigure had just said, his cousin went on to speak more. The ways in which Shigure spoke had a distinctiveness about them, making it slightly easier to differentiate between fact and fiction… and Haru wasn’t entirely buying the following statement.
If the true love theory were fact, then there had to have been a chance for no transforming to have happened years prior. Haru shot Shigure a knowing look.
“Shigure… We’re family. There’s no sense lying,” the teen commented. Haru didn’t want to be lied to or have things sugar coated just because of his being significantly younger than his cousin. He paused for a long moment, looking down at his open hands, with his pale palms almost glowing under the light.
“…but… you didn’t change….” Haru muttered. It was an unbelievable thing. No wonder Shigure hadn’t wanted to say it. But! It was possible.
But there was little to no chance of every cursed Zodiac member experiencing such a wonder. Not to mention, it wasn’t like it was a cure to rid their family of the curse.
“She must not be your every day person…..” Haru said, subtly trying to work his older cousin over to sharing more. He wanted honesty.. and he was also curious about who this woman was - and what she was like… Especially to have had Shigure so enthralled with her.
If Haru doesn’t believe the love theory, there was no way he was going to believe the truth. Hell, he’d think that his elder is down-right insane. Or, more so than insinuated anyway. A relectant sigh escaped the novelist’s lips because he knew it was time to the truth, no matter how ridicoulous it sounded.
“I did not change into my form because she’s not a human.” And before Haru could even comment, he clarifies. “Nono, she’s not any sort of animal. Let me clarify… she’s a Goddess. Erm, Goddess-Demon Hybrid…” After Shigure has finished explaining, he sighed yet again.
“I guess the curse only applies to humans….” Enquired the dog.
Haru turned his head away, partially accepting the possibility that Shigure wouldn’t be answering. He grew more certain of it when he heard the reluctant sigh leave his cousin’s lips. Haru bent a knee upward and rested his elbow on it, tilting his head down - forehead meeting with the palm of his hand. His fingers entwined with untamed strands of white hair.
Much to the cow’s surprise, Shigure’s sigh was followed with the start of what may have been an honest answer. Haru’s forehead left his palm and his hair fell as close to back in place as possible, as he tilted his head somewhat towards Shigure with a puzzled expression.
The look on his face must have been a bit misleading or accusing, as the older Sohma was quick to correct his wording. Haru didn’t intend to make Shigure think he was under the impression the mystery female was an animal. The cow’s lips cracked into the faintest hint of an amused smile in response, but he maintained a calm expression of indifference for the most part. No need to give Shigure reason to not want to be honest with him.
Although, Haru hadn’t been anticipating an answer telling him this… Urd was a goddess or a demon… or a mix of both for that matter. It was…. unbelievable, and Haru found himself unsure of whether to believe or not - initially, at least. He grew silent for a long moment, allowing what his cousin had just said to sink in.
“As absurd as it sounds…..” Haru began to speak. It was his turn to be honest. It was absurd. BUT, it was absurd that he and his fellow family members were cursed with turning into animals from the Chinese Zodiac. So, it was even. If not for his own family’s curse, he may have accused Shigure of insanity. “It makes sense… doesn’t it?”
Other than that, Haru wasn’t sure what else he could say. It just made sense.
